We went to the US embassy in Rabat and I met an American woman who is a foreign service official there, and she has the exact role that I want later in life.
She has three kids, and the oldest went to a French daycare so she speaks fluent French. Plus, the kids have Moroccan nannies so they learn Darija from them, and she speaks English at home. These kids will absorb 3 languages!!!
Anyways, she has been in the foreign service for 13.5 years, and speaks English, Spanish, and French. She went to work in Chile first, where she did the “visa line” (writing visas for people), which is somewhat of a rite of passage for foreign service entrants. Then she went to Latvia, where she had a public affairs position (my goal), and now she’s in Morocco. Foreign service officials move every 3-4 years, so she said that she’s happy her husband is also in foreign service because he can move his job to wherever she is located.
This was all very interesting to hear, because I want a job like hers as well as kids one day, and she found a way to do it all!
